Wood Burning Stoves for Essex Homes

Wood burning stoves are the most popular choice for Essex homeowners, particularly in older properties across Chelmsford, Brentwood and Colchester where period fireplaces are common. Our range includes Ecodesign ready models and DEFRA approved stoves for properties in designated smoke control areas.

All wood burning stoves in our range are supplied by Henley Stoves and Pevex, both of which carry strong reputations for build quality, efficiency and warranty support. If you are unsure which model suits your room size, our room size calculator guide can help you calculate the correct kW output before you buy.

Multi Fuel Stoves for Essex Properties

A multi-fuel stove burns both wood and smokeless solid fuel, which is an important consideration for Essex homeowners in smoke control areas. Chelmsford, Colchester and parts of Southend-on-Sea have designated smoke control zones where only DEFRA approved appliances burning authorised fuels are permitted. A multi-fuel stove gives you the flexibility to use smokeless fuel in these areas and seasoned wood where permitted.

Sherwood 5kW Multi Fuel Eco Stove

Smoke Control Areas in Essex

Is Your Essex Property in a Smoke Control Area?

The following areas of Essex are wholly or partially designated as smoke control zones. If your property falls within one of these areas, you must use a DEFRA approved appliance and authorised fuels only.

  • Chelmsford
  • Colchester
  • Southend-on-Sea
  • Basildon
  • Brentwood
  • Harlow
  • Romford (London Borough of Havering)

You can confirm your postcode on the DEFRA smoke control area checker. All DEFRA approved stoves in our range are clearly marked on their product pages. Call us on 0333 444 0391 if you need guidance on compliant models for your postcode.

No Chimney? Options for Essex Properties

A significant proportion of Essex housing stock, particularly new-build developments in Basildon, Harlow and Romford, was built without a chimney or traditional flue. This does not prevent you from having a stove. There are three practical options:

  • Twin-wall flue system: A twin-wall flue can be routed through an external wall or ceiling in most properties, allowing installation of any wood burning or multi-fuel stove. We stock Specflue liner kits for a range of property types. See our flue accessories range or contact us for advice on your specific property.
  • Bioethanol stoves: No flue or chimney is required. Our bioethanol stove range from Henley produces a real flame from clean-burning ethanol fuel. Suitable for flats, rented properties and rooms where a flue cannot be installed.
  • Electric stoves: Require only a standard 13A socket. Our Henley Aurora electric stove range includes freestanding and inset models suitable for any Essex room. No installation, no flue, no building regulations.

Electric Stoves and Media Wall Fires

Electric stoves and media wall fires have become increasingly popular across Essex, particularly in newer properties and apartments where a solid fuel appliance is not practical. The Henley Aurora range available at Burner Hub offers realistic LED flame effects, adjustable heat output and remote control operation.

Henley Stoves · Electric · Freestanding

Aurora 750 Electric Fire with Log Set

Freestanding electric fire with exclusive log set. Realistic flame effect. No installation required. Plug and use.

Henley Stoves · Electric · Inset

Aurora 650 Insert Electric Fire with Log Set

Inset electric fire for an integrated look. Suits period fireplace openings common across Chelmsford and Brentwood.

Can I have a wood burning stove installed in a smoke control area in Essex?
Yes, provided you use a DEFRA approved stove and authorised fuels such as kiln-dried wood or smokeless fuel. Several areas of Essex including Chelmsford, Colchester and Southend-on-Sea have designated smoke control zones. We can confirm which stoves in our range are DEFRA approved for your postcode. Call us on 0333 444 0391 for guidance.
Do you offer stove installation in Essex?
Yes. We offer free, no-obligation installation quotes through a network of HETAS-registered installers covering Essex and surrounding counties. Visit our stove installation Essex page for full details, or call us on 0333 444 0391 to request a quote.
What size stove do I need for my Essex home?
The standard calculation is room length x width x height (in metres) divided by 14, which gives you the required kW output. Older Essex properties with poor insulation should divide by 10. Our detailed room size calculator guide walks through the full calculation, or call our team on 0333 444 0391 for personalised advice.
I do not have a chimney. Can I still have a stove in my Essex property?
Yes. A twin-wall flue system can be installed in most properties without a chimney. Alternatively, bioethanol stoves and electric stoves require no flue at all. Contact our team on 0333 444 0391 and we can advise on the most suitable option for your specific Essex property.
Are your stoves Ecodesign compliant?
Yes. All wood burning and multi-fuel stoves in our range meet the Ecodesign 2022 standard, which requires significantly lower particulate emissions than previous generation appliances. Ecodesign compliance is indicated on each product page.
